Getting the best picture out of your connection

Most picture complaints come down to the channel rather than the equipment: standard-definition channels look soft on a large screen no matter what box is feeding them. After that, the setting that matters is the box output resolution matching what the television actually is. Beyond those two things, there is very little left to adjust — expensive cables and picture-enhancement settings change nothing worth having.
The channel matters more than anything else
Broadcasters send each channel at a fixed quality, and a standard-definition channel carries far less detail than its HD version. On a large screen that difference is obvious and no setting recovers it.
Many channels exist in both forms at different numbers. If a channel looks noticeably softer than its neighbours, check whether an HD version is in your pack — that alone resolves most complaints.
Match the output to the television
The box has a resolution setting in its menu. Set it to what the television actually is, not the highest number available: 1080i or 1080p for a Full HD set, 2160p only for a genuine 4K screen.
Setting a resolution the television cannot display means it has to rescale everything, which softens the image. Setting one lower than the screen wastes detail. Matching removes an unnecessary conversion from the chain.
What upscaling can and cannot do
When a standard-definition channel is shown on an HD or 4K screen, something has to fill the extra pixels. That is upscaling, and it makes the image fit — it does not add detail that was never broadcast.
Good upscaling looks clean; poor upscaling looks blurry or blocky. Either way the ceiling is what the broadcaster sent. This is why an SD channel on a 4K television still looks soft.
What is genuinely in 4K
A 4K box and a 4K television do not make live channels 4K. Indian DTH broadcasts are largely HD, and 4K content mostly arrives through streaming apps rather than over satellite.
That is worth knowing before buying for the resolution alone. If 4K is the goal, the streaming side of a Binge+ box is where you will actually see it.
Things that make no difference
Expensive HDMI cables. The signal is digital: it arrives or it visibly fails. There is no in-between that a costlier cable improves.
Sharpness turned up on the television. This exaggerates edges rather than revealing detail, and usually makes the picture look worse the closer you sit.
Most factory picture modes labelled dynamic or vivid. They push brightness and colour past what the broadcast contains. A standard or cinema mode is generally closer to what was actually sent.

Why do some channels look sharper than others?

Should I set the box to the highest resolution available?
