Tata Play HD or Binge+ 4K: which set-top box should you get?

Choose the HD box if you mainly watch live TV and either already own a smart TV or do not want streaming apps. Choose Binge+ 4K if you want Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar on an ordinary TV without a separate streaming stick. Both cost the same at ₹3,390 for a twelve-month pack, so the decision is about what your TV already does, not about money.
The short version
The HD box does one job well: it receives live satellite channels and shows them at 1080i. It needs no internet, so it keeps working during a broadband outage.
Binge+ is an Android TV box that happens to also receive satellite. It plays the same live channels, and it runs streaming apps, responds to voice search, and lets you cast from a phone. Those extras need a working internet connection.
When the HD box is the better buy
You already own a smart TV. Your TV runs Netflix and Prime Video, so paying for a second device to do the same thing is money for nothing. A plain HD installation covers you.
Your internet is unreliable or you have no broadband. The streaming half of Binge+ would sit unused.
You mostly watch news, serials and sport. These are live channels; a 4K Android box adds nothing to them.
When Binge+ 4K is worth it
Your TV is a plain 4K or Full HD set with no apps. Binge+ 4K turns it into a smart TV and gives you live channels from one remote and one input.
Your household juggles a streaming stick, a DTH remote and an input switch. One box and one remote removes that.
You want to search by voice, or cast from your phone. Both are built in.
What Binge+ does not include
Binge+ gives you the apps, not the subscriptions. Netflix and Prime Video still need their own paid accounts, though some Tata Play packs bundle access to services like Disney+ Hotstar and ZEE5 — worth checking against the pack you choose.
For 4K streaming, plan on about 25 Mbps. HD streaming is comfortable at 15 Mbps. Live satellite channels are unaffected by your internet speed either way.

Questions people ask
Is Binge+ worth it if I already have a smart TV?
Usually not. If your TV already runs the apps you use, the HD box gives you the same live channels for the same price and you avoid duplicating what the TV does. The exception is if your TV's app experience is slow — Binge+ is often more responsive than the software built into budget smart TVs.
Does Binge+ still work if my internet goes down?
Yes, for live TV. Satellite channels arrive through the dish and are unaffected by broadband. Only the streaming apps, voice search and casting stop working until the connection returns.
Can I upgrade from HD to Binge+ later?
Yes. The dish and cabling stay as they are, so an upgrade means swapping the set-top box. Ask us and we will confirm the current cost of changing over.
