Tata Play remote not working: what to check, in order
3 min read · Updated 31 July 2026
Most unresponsive remotes come down to three things: weak batteries, something blocking the line of sight to the set-top box, or — on Binge+ only — the Bluetooth pairing being lost. Working through the checks below in order fixes the large majority of cases without a technician visit.
Start with the obvious
Replace the batteries with a fresh pair rather than swapping them around. Partly drained batteries often power the indicator light while failing to transmit.
- 1Fit two new AAA batteries, matching the + and − markings.
- 2Check nothing sits in front of the set-top box — a soundbar, a photo frame, a decoration.
- 3Point the remote at the box from about two metres, directly rather than at an angle.
- 4Press a channel button and watch the small light on the remote. No light at all points to the remote; a light with no response points to the box.
If the remote lights up but nothing happens
Check which mode it is in. The remote controls both your TV and the set-top box, and if it was left in TV mode the channel buttons will do nothing to your Tata Play box. Press the button marked for the set-top box and try again.
Restart the box. Unplug it at the wall, wait thirty seconds, plug it back in and let it boot fully. This clears a surprising number of faults.
Binge+ remotes only: re-pairing
The Binge+ voice remote works over Bluetooth as well as infrared, and Bluetooth pairing can be lost after a power cut or a software update. Volume may still work while voice and navigation do not — a strong hint that pairing is the problem.
To re-pair, hold the Home and Back buttons together for about five seconds with the remote close to the box, and follow the prompt on screen.
When to call us
If the remote shows no light with fresh batteries, it has likely failed and needs replacing. If the light works and the box still ignores it after a restart, the fault is more likely in the box's receiver.
Either way, call 81484 44444 — a replacement remote is usually quicker and cheaper than a service visit. Our FAQ covers the other questions that come up most often.
Questions people ask
Can I use my phone as a Tata Play remote?
The Tata Play mobile app includes a remote function that works over your home Wi-Fi with compatible boxes. It is a useful stopgap while you wait for a replacement, though it does not work with every model.
Why does volume work but nothing else?
Volume is usually sent to your television, not the set-top box. If volume responds but channels do not, the remote is working and the problem is either the mode it is in or its link to the box.
Do I have to pay for a replacement remote?
A remote that fails inside the warranty period is replaced free. Outside warranty, or where the remote is damaged, there is a small charge. Call us and we will confirm before sending anyone.
