Is Tata Sky now Tata Play?
3 min read · Updated 7 August 2026
Yes. Tata Sky was renamed Tata Play in January 2022. It is the same company, the same satellite, the same set-top boxes and the same customer accounts — only the name and the logo changed. Existing customers had to do nothing, and set-top boxes bought as Tata Sky still work normally today.
What changed
In January 2022 Tata Sky rebranded as Tata Play. The change was a name and a logo, plus a broader push into streaming — the company wanted to be understood as more than a satellite TV provider, and the Binge and Binge+ products came out of that.
The corporate entity, the licences, the satellite capacity and the engineering all stayed where they were. From a customer's point of view, the channel you were watching on the last day of Tata Sky was the same channel on the first day of Tata Play.
What did not change
Your account number, your subscriber ID and your recharge history all carried across untouched. Nobody needed to re-register, re-verify or pay anything for the transition.
Older hardware kept working. A set-top box sold under the Tata Sky name still receives channels and software updates — there is no cut-off date after which it stops, and there was never a requirement to replace it because of the rename.
Why you still see "Tata Sky" everywhere
Brand names outlive rebrands by years. People still ask us for a Tata Sky connection every day, older boxes and remotes carry the old logo, and a great deal of what is written online predates 2022.
It causes no practical problem. If you ask for a Tata Sky new connection, what you will be given is a Tata Play connection, because that is what the product is called now. Nothing about the service is different from what you were expecting.
If you have an old Tata Sky box
A working box needs nothing done to it. If it has stopped working, that is a repair or a box replacement rather than a new connection, and it costs less — worth saying clearly, because people often book a full new connection when they only need the box swapped.
If the dish is still in good condition, that lowers the cost further. A dish is a dish; it does not expire with a brand name.
Questions people ask
Do I need a new set-top box now that Tata Sky is Tata Play?
No. Boxes sold under the Tata Sky name continue to work and still receive updates. You would only replace one if it has actually failed, or if you want to move from an HD box to Binge+ 4K for the streaming apps.
Did my Tata Sky account or subscriber ID change?
No. Account numbers, subscriber IDs, packs and recharge history all carried over unchanged. There was nothing for existing customers to do.
Is a Tata Sky new connection the same as a Tata Play new connection?
Yes — they are the same thing under two names, and Tata Play is the current one. You can book a new connection whichever way you searched for it.
When exactly did Tata Sky become Tata Play?
January 2022. The rename was announced alongside a wider move into streaming content, which is where the Binge and Binge+ products came from.
